Getafe's signing of Dani Carvajal now hinges on club president Ángel Torres personally guaranteeing the defender's salary. LaLiga has blocked the registration of the right-back because the Madrid-based club has exceeded its squad cost limit, as per the league's financial control regulations.

The player, who is a free agent, has already agreed terms with Getafe on a deal until the end of the season and has even passed his medical. However, the governing body will not authorise the move as the club has no salary cap space. The only way to unblock the situation, as outlined in Article 92 of the league's budgeting rules, is for a shareholder or a third party unconnected to the club to provide a financial guarantee.

Torres's personal guarantee

Ángel Torres will have to provide a bank guarantee or a cash deposit for the amount set by LaLiga's Valuation Body. This committee of three independent experts determines a reference minimum salary for the player, considering his track record, age, market situation, and contract length. The Getafe president already used this procedure during the last winter transfer window to facilitate another signing.

LaLiga has confirmed the measure is strictly temporary and obliges the club to rectify its financial situation within the same season. Until the guarantee is formalised, Carvajal cannot be registered for domestic competition. The 34-year-old defender would train with the squad while awaiting a resolution to the administrative hurdle.

Ruled out for Europe

For the Conference League, the registration option is closed until January. The deadline to register players for the group stage ended on September 2. Only if Getafe progress from that round could Carvajal be registered from January 2, 2027, for a potential playoff tie in February or the round of 16 in March.

Getafe's squad, which can be viewed on the team page, now faces the coming weeks with this uncertainty over a key defensive reinforcement. The fixture list is approaching and the club needs to resolve this obstacle urgently to have the experienced full-back available. Getafe's position in the standings could be influenced by the outcome of this case, which highlights the club's financial constraints.
