Getafe's move to sign Dani Carvajal has collapsed. The club's president, Ángel Torres who became a free agent on June 30 after his contract with Real Madrid expired.

Ángel Torres was blunt when asked about the state of the negotiation. "There is nothing. Everything has broken down," stated the Azulones' chief. The deal, which had progressed to the point where the 34-year-old passed a medical, has fallen through due to LaLiga's financial fair play restrictions. Getafe, who sit 11th in the table with 8 points, exceed their squad cost limit despite it rising by 22 million euros since January to 57 million.

"There is no news. There is no agreement, you cannot break what isn't agreed. We will try," added Torres, emphasising that for a signing to be completed, the league, the player and the club itself must all give their approval. The serious right knee injury Carvajal suffered in October 2024, for which he underwent another arthroscopy a year later, was not a medical obstacle.

Manager José Bordalás had requested the addition of a winger or wide player, a profile that matched Carvajal's experience and versatility. The defender, with 450 official appearances over 13 seasons in Real Madrid's first team and a stint at Bayer Leverkusen, had also attracted interest from AC Milan. Getafe now face their next fixture, a trip to league leaders Barcelona on Saturday, without this defensive reinforcement.
